For newcomers, Lichess might be a little complicated to navigate through.
Don’t worry! This guide will help you navigate the platform and start playing in no time.
Step 1: Visit the Lichess Website
Head over to Lichess.org.

Step 2: Play Without an Account
If you don’t want to create an account and prefer to be randomly paired with someone online, simply click on “Create a game”. Lichess will automatically find an opponent for you.
a) Select a time control that suits your playing style. Lichess offers various options, such as:
Once you’ve selected your time control, you can click on the slider next, and select the number of minutes/hours/days you want the match to go on for.
Choose Casual if you don’t want the match to affect your rating. Choose Rated if you want otherwise.
P.S.: We recommend creating an account before playing rated matches for your ease of analysis.
Lichess will automatically pair you with another player who has chosen the same settings. You will be able to start your game immediately!
Step 3: Play with a Friend
If you want to play with a friend, you have two options:
a) With an Account: Create a Lichess account to save and analyze your matches later. (For step-by-step guidance on how to create one, check out this article.)
b) Without an Account: You can still play with a friend without signing in. (Scroll to find out how.)
In both cases, click on “Play with a Friend” to start setting up your game.
